Hakone is a popular tourist resort that is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Hakone is blessed with natural scenery with Mt Fuji in its background, the beautiful Lake Ashino-ko in its centre and surrounded by muontains and hot springs, including the volcanic Owakudani Valley. These can all be easily accessed by several modes of transportation including trains, buses, cablecars, ropeways and pleasure boats. The greenery, mountain scenery, streaming hot springs and fresh air attract many visitors year-round. The town of Hakone forms the hub of the national park where places of historic interest and modern tourist facilities are harmoniously blended with nature. The major historic spots include Hakone Shrine, the Cedar Avenue fringing the shore of Lake Ashi  along the old Tokaido Highway and the Hakone Checkpoint, established in 1619 by the Tokugawa shogunate for the purpose of keeping sumarai under control.
