Kamakura
2 nights / 3 days Shogun Experience
Kamakura was once the capital of the Shogunate government from 1192 to 1333.
This ancient capital is a delightful hamlet with over 65 Buddhist temples and 19 Shinto shrines, most built centuries ago. The village is enclosed on three sides by hills and on the fourth by the sea, a setting that lends a dramatic background to its temples and shrines. Favoured by artists and writers, Kamakura has numerous antique and traditional craft shops. Kamakura is best explored by foot. The most famous shrine in Kamakura is Tsurugaoka-hachiman-gu Shrine. At nearby Hase is Kotokuin Temple, home to the great bronze statue of Buddha which is the symbol of Kamakura. A few minutes walk down the road is Hasedera Temple, dedicated to the eleven-headed goddess Kannon.
